my brother is starting a buisness, plumbing and heating.
he is all corgi reg, and has plenty of experiance.

he is just deciding at the moment, what designs to put on the side of the van.
he needs a logo on his van, that he can have on his invoices, letter heads, bills, reciepts etc.

It is great to hear of someone starting up a new business. It can be a very exciting experience.

Dave has the right idea. getting the image right first. The flame idea sounds good.

Here r some 'Start up Tips' of things l would prioritise if starting my business again, with hindsight & knowing the mistakes l made when l did it.

Find a good value printer & ask him to help with the logo design. He may do it free or may charge £50-100, either way get it done right first time & stick it on EVERYTHING. Van, Business Cards, Leaflets, Boiler/appliance stickers, Invoice Books, Letterheads, etc.

Get some low cost leaflets done, single colour on coloured paper will be fine & cost effective. the printer should charge around £30 for 1000 A5 single sided ones. This will be Dave is best investment if he uses them well. (See my link to my answer on leaflet design below.)

Get in touch with BT Phonebook, Thomson Local, & Yellow Pages & get his free listing registered asap! (Link below will give u links for all 3. Get a small advert in Thomsons, BT, Yell in that order of priority based on my experience as to what gets the best return on the investment. He will need to be in all 3 eventually, but only when he has enough money coming in & the capacity to cope with the work without having to let people down. Start with a small ad in Thomsons which costs from less than £200 up to £700 for a whole year. About £4 to £15 per week in reality which will be paid for with only one new customer.

Get Polo Shirts done with the Fitzgerald logo & company colour. Should cost about £10-14 each. (Xmas Pressie idea??!)

Bash the leaflets out. Do not just post them, knock on the door & give them to prople so they know u r starting up. they will be only too willing to help u & pass u business. Believe me, the British Public love to help an underdog, so do not be afraid to say u have just started ur own business. Sunday 11am - 3pm is a great time to 'cold call' & leaflet the local housing estates in ur area (Older ones) Look out for people moving house who might want to renovate a heating system.
