hey, l was recently assigned the responsibility of advertising editor for my school newspaper, but wasnt really given any guidence on how to do my job. my school has around 600 kids, located in a pretty nice neighborhood, and the paper is distributed for free to public places and parents. the part l really need help with is the financials. whats standard charge for ads like this? whats standard sizing options?

Look the best way is that u find some youth magazine in ur area & check how they r placing ads in it (size, placement etc..) then u go to the shopping centers & boutiques in the blocks where ur newspaper will be distributed & check the possibility to have the shop owners publish their ads with you.

Put for yourself a target (financial Target) to achieve, then work according to that target. l think the school principal will be happy to help u if u suggest to him that he work-out the targets for u & that u convince him u will earn money for the paper.

Afterall this will help u become an advertisement agent on ''little scale''.

Visit Reputed Advertising Company, in your City, engaged in selling space for Regular Magazines and Newspaper. Interview with them will give adequate idea about Discount and Rates, you shall fix, for school Newspaper.

After fixing Rates, you contact Stationers, Drawing Equipment, and Uniform sellers / marketing companies, in your City.

l advertise in anything & everything that goes on in 14 high schools within a 5 mile radius of my business. l spend a lot of money on advertising! l am in Ohio.

This is what l have found. For the schools with a professionally run newspaper that comes out every 2 months the cost is $202.50 per issue for an ad that is approx. 3x5 in size in color. There r 6 of them in my area that do this.

For the schools that do their own paper, the cost is $50-75 per issue unless the business will advertise in multiple issues & then the price is about 1/2 (this varies) for the same size ad. If ur paper is weekly the price is discounted very low because they want u to advertise all the time so they can count on that revenue. l have one school that charged me $150 to advertise for the entire school year!

l assume u have a sports booster group & yearbook staff that both charge for advertising in program books & the yearbook. l would see what they r charging & use that as a basis. Also, the businesses that advertise in these venues r the first ones l would contact about advertising in the paper! They already know & support the school!
