l just reformatted my computer, and for some reason, both internet explorer and opera internet browser is google search, or any search engine l use, it comes up with the right results for whatever l search for, but when l click the results, it opens upnew window and takes me to some website that is totally different. I've tried multiple search engines and multiple searches, but it keeps happening. any ideas?

l suggest you to format the harddisk once more removing partitions if there is any. Then install OS and then install antivirus ( AVG free edition with do ) keeping the windows firewall on. Then connect the internet. Update the antivirus. Run a through virus scan. Your problem should get solved.

sounds like a virus or adware.. if u formatted ur computer then somehow it got back on ur computer, or u just reinstalled without formatting..
you can search google for housecall it is a free online virus scanner from trendmicro..
but having a virus scanner on ur computer running 24/7 is usless in my opinion.. the virus scanner slows ur pc down, & will NOT catch every virus anyways. Best is just to be careful of what u download & install.
or switch to linux or any kind of unix based operating system even mac.. as they r 100% virus free.. not possible! never need a virus scanner, download anything & everything, & never have any problems.
